The Word on the Street 2009

Sunday, September 27, 2009 was the Word on the Street‘s 20th year! The weather held up and the festival was quite the success! Here are a few of our photos from the day:

Tundra was at booth #245 this year with lots of great book deals and giveaways!

From Jacob Two-Two on the High Seas, Cary Fagan teaches the audience the chorus of the Pirate Song: “It’s the pirate life for us, hey ho! The pirate life for us! Aaarrrgh!”

At 1:30pm in the Little Readers Tent, Theo Heras sang songs from What Will We Do with the Baby-O? Click here to watch the video.

2:00pm at the Comics and Graphic Novels Tent was Graphic Memoirs: Three New Works. Tundra’s Lesley Fairfield (Tyranny) presented with Canadian graphic memoirists, Tory Woolcott (Mirror Mind) and Adam Bourret (I’m Crazy). Thank you to Christopher Butcher and Peter Birkemoe from The Beguiling for organizing this program.

Launch of: It’s a Snap!

Last night, Monica Kulling and Bill Slavin celebrated the launch of It’s a Snap! George Eastman’s First Photograph at the Stephen Bulger Gallery and Camera Bar. This was Monica’s first book launch in all her years of being published! There was a tremendous amount of support from family (especially Nancy and EsperanÃ§a) and friends. Thank you to everyone that came out to congratulate Monica and Bill!

Monica bakes a mean lemon cake! I wanted all four loaves to myself… Thank you to Monica’s cousin for baking and decorating her famous date cake. The rest of the snacks and nibbles were catered from Amazing Food.

Mystery Monday with Curtis Parkinson

McNally Robinson Booksellers invited Curtis Parkinson for their Mystery Monday event. Curtis read two passages from his newest young adult novel, The Castle on Deadman’s Island.

If you weren’t able to make it to the event, Curtis did sign copies of The Castle on Deadman’s Island and Death in Kingsport that will be available at McNally Robinson on a first come, first serve basis. Thank you to the wonderful team at McNally Robinson for all their hard work and help!

Don’t forget to read Curtis Parkinson’s interview about The Castle on Deadman’s Island in The Kingston Whig Standard. In the interview, Curtis explains how Boldt Castle inspired this mystery novel.

Curtis Parkinson will be participating at this year’s Eden Mills Writers Festival on Sunday, September 20, 2009. He will also be touring Saskatchewan for the TD Canadian Children’s Book Week during Saturday, November 14 to Saturday, November 21, 2009.

There was a great number of people who came to hear Curtis Parkinson read. The audience asked him lots of questions, had their books signed, and had their pictures taken. Short video clips of the reading are posted on our youtube channel.

Storytime with Jo Ellen Bogart

This past Saturday, Jo Ellen Bogart came to Toronto for a reading at McNally Robinson Booksellers. I found her at the front door pointing to her event poster with delight. She walked in and was jaw-dropping amazed at how beautiful everything was.

Happily, we made our way to the second floor’s event space where tables and chairs were being set up for Jo Ellen’s reading. Aside from reading Big and Small, Room for All, Jo Ellen also made a presentation on her laptop. Look how innovative she is! I have to say, I learned a few things during her reading too!

Following her reading, Jo Ellen Bogart signed books and posters. If you weren’t able to make it to the event, Jo Ellen did sign a few copies of Big and Small, Room for All that will be available at McNally Robinson on a first come, first serve basis.

After the reading, I decided to have lunch at Prairie Ink, the restaurant and bakery in McNally Robinson. It was such a beautiful day to sit on the patio, listen to all the happy book chatter, and have a cupcake.
