Q&A with Kyo:

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

Probably Mallorca, on the Mediterranean near my uncle and his garden.

What’s one thing that can instantly make your day better?

My cats, sons, books, birds, music, long walks and a plate of pasta. (Sorry! More than one thing.)

Which meal is your favorite: breakfast, lunch, or dinner?

Pasta. Or: Japanese breakfast. (The meal not the indie band.)

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? or What’s your “dance like nobody’s watching” song?

Best concert: Lhasa de Sela at Hugh’s Room. Dance song: Thinking of You by Sister Sledge.

What do you look for in a friendship?

Laughter. And the ability to spin through every emotion together.

What has been your favorite thing to plant?

Shiso (or “perilla”) from seed. The frilly green leaves are delicious with sushi.

Bloom: A Story of Fashion Designer Elsa Schiaparelli
By Kyo Maclear
Illustrated by Julie Morstad
40 Pages | Ages 5-9 | Hardcover
ISBN 9781101918562 | Tundra Books
Here is the life of iconic fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, who as a little girl in Rome, was told by her own mamma that she was brutta. Ugly. So she decided to seek out beauty around her, and found it everywhere. What is beauty? Elsa wondered. She looked everywhere for beauty until something inside of Elsa blossomed, and she became an artist with an incredible imagination. Defining beauty on her own creative terms, Schiaparelli worked hard to develop her designs, and eventually bloomed into an extraordinary talent who dreamed up the most wonderful dresses, hats, shoes and jewelry. Why not a shoe for a hat? Why not a dress with drawers? And she invented a color: shocking pink! Her adventurous mind was the key to her happiness and success – and is still seen today in her legacy of wild imagination. Daring and different, Elsa Schiaparelli used art to make fashion, and it was quite marvelous.

It Began With a Page: How Gyo Fujikawa Drew the Way
By Kyo Maclear
Illustrated by Julie Morstad
48 Pages | Ages 5-9 | Hardcover
ISBN 9781101918593 | Tundra Books
Gyo Fujikawa’s iconic children’s books are beloved all over the world. Now it’s time for Gyo’s story to be told – a story of artistic talent that refused to be constrained by rules or expectations. Growing up quiet and lonely at the beginning of the twentieth century, Gyo learned from her relatives the ways in which both women and Japanese people lacked opportunity. Her teachers and family believed in her and sent her to art school and later Japan, where her talent flourished. While Gyo’s career grew and led her to work for Walt Disney Studios, World War II began, and with it, her family’s internment. But Gyo never stopped fighting – for herself, her vision, her family and her readers – and later wrote and illustrated the first children’s book to feature children of different races interacting together.

A playful, scrumptious celebration of the joy of eating, the importance of never completely growing up and mastering the art of having a good time, Julia, Child is a fictional tale loosely inspired by the life and spirit of the very real Julia Child – a story that should be taken with a grain of salt and a generous pat of butter.

Kumo: The Bashful Cloud
By Kyo Maclear
Illustrated by Nathalie Dion
64  Pages | Ages 4-8 | Hardcover

Kumo is a cloud whose only wish is to float unseen. When she’s assigned cloud duty for the day, she feels overwhelmed by self-doubt and her fear of being noticed. But after learning that closing your eyes isn’t a good solution to your troubles, Kumo pulls her fluff together and does her duties – drifting, releasing rain and providing shelter – meeting some new friends along the way and inspiring the imagination (and capturing the heart) of a small daydreamer like her. Kyo Maclear’s sweetly humorous and lyrical parable about shyness, vividly brought to life by Nathalie Dion’s ethereal illustrations, is an affirmation of the pleasures of community and the confidence that can arise from friendship and visibility.

The Big Bath House
By Kyo Maclear

ISBN 9780593181959 | Random House Studio
In this celebration of Japanese culture and family and naked bodies of all shapes and sizes, join a little girl – along with her aunties and grandmother – at a traditional bath house. Once there, the rituals leading up to the baths begin: hair washing, back scrubbing, and, finally, the wood barrel drumroll. Until, at last, it’s time, and they ease their bodies – their creased bodies, newly sprouting bodies, saggy, jiggly bodies – into the bath. Ahhhhhh! With a lyrical text and gorgeous illustrations, this picture book is based on Kyo Maclear’s loving memories of childhood visits to Japan, and is an ode to the ties that bind generations of women together.

When a Red-hooded Spectacled Female (Juvenile) appears, Warble discovers that he’s not the only one who notices the fog. Will they be able to find others who can see it too? And is the fog here to stay? Kyo Maclear’s witty story, brought to life with the delicate, misty artwork of Kenard Pak, is a poignant yet humorous reminder of the importance of environmental awareness.

ISBN 9781101919033

“Young readers … will pore over the intricately detailed black-on-cream cut-paper illustrations…. Striking geometric silhouetted images invite long, happy perusal (gears and wind-up keys abound)…. Chihiro Takeuchi is a well-known cut-paper artist in Osaka, Japan. Can You Find My Robot’s Arm? is her debut English-language picture book, although she has written and illustrated several books in Japanese. Readers will surely be asking librarians, ‘Can you find more books by Chihiro Takeuchi?'”

Yak and DoveYak and Dove
By Kyo Maclear
Illustrated by Esme Shapiro
Hardcover | Ages 4 to 8
ISBN 9781770494947

“Odd-couple friendships are nothing new in children’s literature, but seldom is one portrayed with the grace and sly humor Maclear and Shapiro bring to this story…. Maclear (The Liszts) divides the story into three chapters, all told in spare but emotionally rich dialogue…. Shapiro (Ooko) fills her watercolor, gouache, and pencil illustrations with subtle comedy … and excels at depicting the quiet pleasures of being simpatico, when a look between friends says it all.”

The FogThe Fog
By Kyo Maclear
Illustrated by Kenard Pak
Hardcover | Ages 4 to 8
ISBN 9781770494923

“Pak’s digitally worked pencil-and-watercolor illustrations support and enhance this simple parable…. Humor is to be found in the extensive human identifications that grace the endpapers and early pages of Warble’s story, a nod to the habits of bird-watchers like the author…. Reaching out lifts both fog and spirits; it brightens days and nights. A song about sharing that’s sure to lift readers’ spirits as well.”

Little Blue ChairLittle Blue Chair
By Cary Fagan
Illustrated by Madeline Kloepper
Hardcover | Ages 3 to 7
ISBN 9781770497559

“Illustrator Madeline Kloepper works in a soothing, muted palette and her tender ink-and-pencil style is part Ruth Krauss and part Julie Morstad, with a vintage tinge. But Kloepper also infuses her style with several modern touches: there are diverse characters and families, everything is suspended in clean, crisp white space, and adult Boo sports a hipster beard and baseball tee. The result is a very sweet little marriage between old and new, with magic officiating the ceremony.”

How to Make Friends with a GhostHow to Make Friends with a Ghost
By Rebecca Green
Hardcover | Ages 4 to 8
ISBN 9781101919019

“With rosy cheeks, wide eyes, and childlike interests, this ghost is not just not-scary but utterly endearing. A cozy, muted autumnal palette; plenty of visual humor; and relaxed hand-lettering further lighten the punny text, making for a tongue-in-cheek but strangely sweet picture book about enduring friendship.”
